NES Internship Project Nominated for futurezone Award

Dienstag, 14. Oktober 2014 15:26

The internship project “Multi-Robot Indoor System,” which was awarded at Jugend Innovativ, has been nominated for the Austrian futurezone Award in the category robotics. Interested people are asked to vote for their favorite project.

Günther Cwioro and Peter Kohout, two NES interns going to school at HTL Villach, have worked on networked robots allowing robots to exchange maps created by each robot individually. Under the guidance of Torsten Andre in the group of Professor Bettstetter, the two pupils extended a system for autonomous mapping of unknown indoor environments. They implemented wireless communication between robots without having to rely on pre-installed communication hardware, such as wireless routers or cellular networks. The newly created communication modules are used to exchange local maps produced by robots and to merge these local maps to a common global map.

NES works on autonomous multi-robot systems. Research focuses on the organization and communication during the exploration of indoor environments. Such autonomous systems may keep humans from entering hazardous environments by exploring it first.

Security Infrastructures for Data- and Identity-Protection 06. 03. 2013, 17:00, HS 2

Mittwoch, 6. März 2013 11:58

Vortragender: Stefan Rass

Cloud computing and the increasing variety of services offered over the internet have created interesting new challenges for security, ranging far beyond classical goals like confidentiality, integrity, authenticity or availability. Protection of data nowadays extends data confidentiality to the protection of identities (ownership and user behavior) as well. This duty of anonymization is mostly up to security infrastructures and new cryptographic primitives. The respective infrastructure design processes cannot be reduced to a humble assembly of cryptographic building blocks, but must cover for aspects of risk management and the interplay of security components. Handling these matters calls for a deep understanding of how cryptography supports and determines system security. Besides, security cannot be achieved by cryptography alone, and techniques from various other fields of computer science and mathematics (outside conventional cryptography) are required for a comprehensive protection.

In this talk, we will discuss the potential of game-theoretic risk management in security infrastructure design. As an illustrative example for the design process, we will take closer looks at two methods for anonymization of data and identities, as provided by nowadays security infrastructures. We will point out design pitfalls and collect guidelines on how to properly construct a security infrastructure from cryptographic primitives.

CV: Stefan Rass works in the System Security Research Group at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. He received a PhD in mathematics for his research in information-theoretic security and risk management, with applications in Quantum Cryptography. His main research interests cover classical cryptography, as well as the design of security infrastructures and security risk management.

June 2012: Guest Lecture „Artificial Vision“!

Dienstag, 8. Mai 2012 8:46

Lecture Series on “Artificial Vision”
Prof. Gian Luca Foresti, Dr. Christian Micheloni and Dr. Claudio Piciarelli

(all University of Udine)

The lecture series will aim to introduce the techniques for developing advanced artificial vision based systems. From the early stages of image creation to the most advanced techniques for image and video interpretation the course will propose the state of the art algorithms for detecting objects and understanding their behaviours. A small amount of hours will be reserved to laboratory activities.
